Pushkar Camel Fair

Pushkar spends most of the year as a quiet lakeside pilgrimage town. For a few weeks around Kartik Purnima, it becomes one of the largest livestock fairs in the world, as traders and their camels converge from across Rajasthan onto the desert sands surrounding the town.

History & Significance

The fair's timing is tied to Pushkar's religious calendar — the town is home to one of India's only major temples dedicated to Brahma, the creator deity, a genuine rarity in a country where Brahma temples are otherwise almost nonexistent despite his central place in the Hindu trinity, a scarcity local legend attributes to a curse from his wife Saraswati. Pilgrims bathe in Pushkar Lake during Kartik Purnima for religious merit, and the camel and livestock trading fair grew up alongside that pilgrimage traffic over generations, eventually becoming the dominant reason most outside visitors now attend.

What Happens

Thousands of camels, horses, and cattle are bought, sold, and traded across the fairgrounds, alongside a temporary tent city, folk music and dance performances, and competitions ranging from camel races to more recently added tourist-oriented contests. At night, the fairgrounds fill with campfires and desert-camp accommodation, while the religious side continues in parallel at the ghats of Pushkar Lake and the Brahma Temple itself.
